Torch Ginger by Toby Neal

Book Blurb:

The island of Kaua`i is remote jungle, golden beaches and ancient culture—but the homeless are disappearing in paradise, and only Detective Lei Texeira notices.

Fleeing a failed engagement, Detective Lei Texeira transfers to the island of Kaua`i, where she uncovers a pattern of disappearances that may be related to a bizarre cult—or is it just one madman at work? In Lei's world, everyone is guilty until proven innocent.

In Blood Orchids Lei battled her personal demons and won—but now they've come roaring back with reinforcements, including charming real estate magnate Alika Wolcott and former fiancĂ© Michael Stevens. In the midst of the biggest case sleepy Kaua`i has ever seen, Lei must also discover who she loves.

My review:

A while back Toby asked me to read Blood Orchids and I loved it. You can check out my review of Blood Orchids here. So when she asked me if I'd like to read Torch Ginger my answer was an adamant YES!

In Blood Orchids we got to know Lei Texeira pretty well. She's a cop with a horrible past that has left her a bit messed up, but she's working on it.

Now, in Torch Ginger Lei has moved on following her break-up with Stevens. She's trying to build a new life on a new island and trying to fit in with her new squad, when a missing persons case fall into her lap that leads to the discovery of a potential serial killer.

This is primarily a mystery, but also a romance, and best of all it is a study of human nature, relationships, and what makes us who we are. A solid four and a half stars for Torch Ginger!

About the author:
Toby Neal was raised on Kaua`i in Hawaii. She wrote and illustrated her first story at age five. After initially majoring in journalism, she settled on mental health as a career and loves her work, saying, “I’m endlessly fascinated with people’s stories.” Toby credits her counseling background in adding depth to her characters–from the villains to Lei Texeira, the courageous multicultural heroine of the Lei Crime Series.

  1. Almost a year later, and I just finished Torch Ginger, after also reading Blood Orchids. I started this series enroute to Hawaii for a 10-day vacation, and it was perfect reading for thinking about going to Korean, going there, being there, and just back from there! I think Toby Neal is a gifted writer and I'm looking forward to reading the whole series. Thanks for your good reviews! I came across you, by the way, on Library Thing!

  2. I'm glad you enjoyed Torch Ginger and Blood Orchids. There is now a third book in the series and I have it on my Kindle but have not yet read it. I agree, Toby is gifted and I love reading about the lush Hawaiian scenery along with the mysteries. Thanks for stopping by and for telling me how you found me. I always enjoy learning that and hearing from Abites.
